Singapore company put up ad recruiting Filipino civil engineers instead of Singaporeans

A Singapore company has approached a Filipino manpower agency – ‘Omanfil International Manpower Development Inc’ to recruit Filipino civil engineers specifically to fill four vacant positions.

The candidates must possess at least a Bachelor’s or College Degree and between 25 to 45 years of age. It is strange that the company is looking to hire Filipino engineers when Singapore produces hundreds of civil engineers each year.

Hawker couple attacks S’pore family

A Singaporean family was assaulted yesterday by a hawker couple known for their bad temper. (Yahoo!)

A portion of anchovies, better known to locals as "ikan bilis", sparked off a brawl between a Singaporean family and a hawker couple at Food Loft along Clementi Ave 3 on Thursday.

According to local news website, AsiaOne, the dispute started after Julia, a STOMP contributor, took an extra portion of anchovies from a container placed outside the hawker stall after paying for her noodles.

The female stall holder, who according to Julia was from China, then raised her voice and said, "You Singaporeans who are paying so little money want to have so much of everything." She continued to complain to passers-by and her husband.

Julia's husband then approached the female hawker to ask why she was making a big fuss out of an extra portion of anchovies. Agitated, the female stall holder slammed the plastic container of anchovies that he was holding onto the table.

Julia's husband later revealed that they had also tried to take photos of the food from the stall. They had planned to make a report to National Environment Agency as the food did not seem clean.

This incurred the wrath of the male hawker, who stepped out of the stall and demanded to know why he was taking pictures. The hawker couple then started to attack Julia and her husband. Their 14 year-old son was punched in the process. The male hawker also hit Julia's husband's head with an object.

Julia's husband could not retaliate as Julia and the coffee shop owner had stopped him from doing so.

Even after the family ran away in defence, the hawker woman stood in front of Julia's car to prevent the family from driving off, allowing her husband to continue attacking the car from behind.

Julia sustained injuries on her back and head after falling while trying to stop her husband from retaliating during the attack. Both her husband's eyes were swollen and her son also suffered a bruised eye. The family's medical bills amounted to S$180. They also made a police report later that night.

The coffee shop owner later revealed that the hawker couple they encountered was known for their bad temper.

A police report has been lodged against the hawkers. The police have classified it as mischief and voluntarily causing hurt and are currently looking into the matter.

Alex Tan lodged police report against NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu over alleged threat

Former Reform Party candidate for Ang Mo Kio GRC Alex Tan Zhi Xiang has lodged a police report this morning against NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu for allegedly ‘intimidating’ him on his microblog ‘Weibo’.

A final year student in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, Sun sparked a massive outcry among Singaporeans with his offensive remarks on there “being more dogs than humans in Singapore.”

After being told by a friend who was following his thread on ‘Weibo’ that ‘Alex’ will come after him soon, Sun declared arrogantly:

“I will wait for him (Alex) with a knife.”

Replying to the comments on the same thread, Mr Sun heaped further insults on Singaporeans, cursing them as:

“Bunch of 挫逼. My temper these days is already a lot better.”

“挫逼” is a derogatory word commonly in mainland China for cursing people, an equivalent of the Hokkien phrase ‘CCB’ used as a vulgarity in Singapore.

Sun has since change his moniker on ‘Weibo’ to “子小九日“

Alex Tan, who lodged a similar police report against another PRC student Wang Peng Fei last year for making racist remarks about Singaporeans said he is lodging the police report against Sun for issuing a death threat to him, or to be exact, under Penal Code Chapter 22 Section 506 for criminal intimidation:

“Aside from worrying about my own safety, I intend to make this police report partly because I would like to see if foreigners, especially those labelled as ‘foreign talents’, have special protection rights to law and order in Singapore.”

Though Sun has already deleted the offensive thread, he remains unrepentant and unapologetic.

When asked about the controversy by a Chinese tabloid, Sun replied nonchalantly without offering a public apology or showing any signs of remorse:

“I am only complaining. It is just a small matter and I do not want to blow it up. Anyway, I have already deleted the comment.”

Meanwhile, a friend of Sun said he is completely unfazed by the controversy because he believes NUS will not dare to take any disciplinary action against him since he is a PRC undergraduate scholar and a top student in his faculty for the last two years.

“More dogs than humans in Singapore” – NUS PRC student’s comments spark outcry

“There are more dogs than humans in Singapore,” wrote Sun Xu, a MOE scholar and a final year student in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore.

Mr Sun was sharing about his unpleasant encounters with Singaporeans on his microblog “Weibo” who reportedly glared at him when he brushed them aside accidentally in the streets .

Below is what he wrote in Chinese:

The direct translation is:

‘It’s so annoying to have gangster Singapore uncles stare at you when you bump into them. There are more dogs than humans here in Singapore’.

His comment sparked a outcry in cyberspace with many netizens condemning him for it.

STOMPER ‘theDoors’ wrote sarcastically in reference to Senior Minister of State Grace Fu’s comment yesterday that ‘extremist’ voices on social media is becoming a threat to Singapore’s social fabric:

“I supposed calling Singaporeans dogs on social media is part of creating harmony in the social fabric?”

Alan Tan was peeved:

“We are feeding these dogs that bite their owners. Should get a bat to whack these dogs hard. Ungrateful dogs, we feed them, clothe them and give them a shelter. This is what we have in return.”

According to his linkedin account posted by forumers on Hardwarezone forum, Mr Sun came to Singapore to study at Raffles Junior College on a MOE scholarship in 2006 after which he went on to study in NUS on a ‘PRC undergraduate scholarship,’ meaning that his tuition fees and living expenses are all paid for by the Singapore government.

Mr Sun is currently on attachment at Schlumberger, an international oilfield services company.

During a parliamentary session this week, it was revealed that Singapore spends some $36 million dollars on scholarships to over two thousand students each year.
