PAP Member of Parliament Mr Seng Han Thong's racially offensive remarks about woes of train service breakdowns made worse by Malay and Indian SMRT employees' because of their poor command of the English language of is a symptom of a larger problem within the ruling party.
The Singapore Democrats made a statement on The Online Citizen recently regarding Mr Jason Neo when the Young PAP member had posted a photograph of a Muslim kindergarten bus and captioned it: "Bus filled with young terrorist trainees?"
One week ago, the Singapore Democratic Party issued a statement on the disruptions to the train service. We are gratified that the three recommendations we made have been adopted by the government in their entirety:
1. That the Minister for Transport return to Singapore and conduct an Urgent Safety and Health Check (USHC) on the functioning of the MRT system to ensure that immediate concerns are eliminated so that the safety of commuters and the security of the system are not compromised.
In 2010 Minister for Law K Shanmugam said that the SMRT was a private entity and onus is on the company - not the government - to ensure that their premises are safe and secure.
The Minister was responding to criticisms that the PAP Government had not done a proper job in ensuring adequate security in the MRT system after a Swiss national had broken into a train depot and painted graffiti on one of the carriages.
Chia Thye Poh may be forgiven for thinking that after 33 years in confinement, people from both ends of the Causeway have relegated him to the annals of history.
On the evidence of the reception he received at the Confucian Private Secondary School in Lorong Hang Jebat here yesterday, the 70-year-old is still fondly remembered, at least by the 400 people attending an award presentation.
The Singapore Democrats met last Saturday to take stock of everything that happened in 2011 - and there was much that happened besides the general elections in May - as well as to draw up plans for the coming year.
Members and associates attended the year-end Annual Strategic Review to assess the party's programme and to ensure that the various sub-committees that carry out these plans remain well-staffed and well-managed.
Following the latest train breakdown last night aloing the North-South Line Transport Minister Mr Lui Tuck Yew posted this statement yesterday on his Facebook:
"There have been a number of train disruptions in recent days. I do not know if these are isolated incidents or whether there are systemic and more serious underlying issues causing these breakdowns."
The Singapore Democrats recently marked World Human Rights Day on 10 December with this video message from Ms Teo Soh Lung. But the PAP insists that human rights - and by extension, democracy - is a Western concept alien to the Asian mindset.
We present below historical facts to demonstrate that this is patently untrue and debunk, once and for all, the idea that advocates of democracy are doing the bidding of the West.
Singapore Democrats In Part 1, we discussed how fragile the international financial system had become. The reckless abandon with which bankers and traders conducted their activities was nothing short of scandalous.
Take for instance, Geraint Anderson. a London trader who revealed that he had zero experience in stockmarket investments when he was given a job by his brother in a brokerage firm. Anderson went on to make tons of money by selling what was essentially financial snakeoil. This is his confession:
Sisters in democracy - that's how they described themselves. More than 20 Women Democrats and associates got together over the weekend to discuss politics. The subject? Accountability and transparency of the PAP Government and its autocratic rule.
They also talked about how to advance women's role in polictics in Singapore and laid plans for the SDP women's wing. One project: a regional women's conference for democratic politics in Asia.
"What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?" This was a question that author and activist Naomi Klein tackled in her talk at TED(Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference lecture.
She was speaking on the subject of climate change but used it to address the issue of how some over-achievers become so full of themselves and their own abilities that they adopt an attitude of infallibility and, based on such perception, would take reckless risks in decision-making.
10 December marks International Human Rights Day. Ms Teo Soh Lung delivers the SDP's 2011 message, calling on Singaporeans to claim back our rights that have been taken away.
In an interview in 2003, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, then the deputy prime minister and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) chairman, said that "you must have a sound financial system in order for the rest of the economy to work." Few would quarrel with that.
Without a sturdy and reliable system that operated the exchange of money, little else can happen in a modern economy. The question is, how do you define "sound"?
In our on-going campaign at the Tanjong Pagar GRC, the Singapore Democrats visited the Kreta Ayer Food Centre at Chinatown on Sunday to greet residents and get to know the electorate.
Although the next elections is still years away, the SDP is wasting no time in establishing our presence there and to introduce ourselves to the prople in the constituency. We have been visiting the GRC in the past several weeks and will continue to do so until GE 2016.
Ms Surayah, a leading member of the SDP's women wing, spoke up against human trafficking and called on the Govt to do more to tackle the on-going in S'pore at the Slutwalk event.
The longest-serving political prisoner in the Asian history, former S'pore member of parliament Chia Thye Poh, 70 years old, was awarded the Lim Lian Geok Spirit Award.
The variable components of the ministers' pay comprises of 2 major bonuses – the GDP Bonus and the Performance Bonus, which is kept secret, can be up to 14 months.
It is not American-democracy versus Asian values, it is not East versus West. It is about the divide between the dominators - both in the East and West - and the dominated.
Mr Francis Khoo, a S'porean living in exile in the UK, passed away last week. Mr Khoo had fled S'pore after the PAP wanted to arrest him under the ISA in 1977.
It is a veritable myth that Mr Lee eschews the Western style of government. In truth, the former prime minister embraces its system - most whole-heartedly.
Dr Chee Soon Juan recorded a video that was played at the IBA conference in Dubai after the Government refused to approve his travel to attend the conference.
The Young Democrats attended the annual congress of the Parti KeAdilan Rakyat in JB where leaders spoke on readying the party for the general elections expected to be called in Mäsia soon.
The SDP sent a copy of our review of the ministers' salaries,Ethical Salaries For A Public Centred Government, to PM Lee Hsien Loong and urged him to implement the recommendations contained therein.
"When the man in command thinks of a quiet and peaceful retirement in modest circumstances, there is hope of progress in the country." - Lee Kuan Yew (1963)
As the youth wing of the party currently in govt, would it not have been far more sensible and effective to seek a meeting with the relevant ministers and officers to put their case?
Much criticism has been leveled at the excessive amounts PAP ministers pay themselves, but there has not been any in-depth study about the level of remuneration cabinet ministers should receive.
The Singapore Democrats went on a walkabout to meet with residents at the Tanjong Pagar GRC on 20 Nov 2011. Watch the two elderly ladies talk about the cost of living towards the end of the clip.
The SDP was back in Tanjong Pagar to contine our preparation to contest in the GRC in the next GE. Members moved from food centres in the Tanglin Halt and Alexandra areas of the constituency spreading the SDP's message.
Societies that are pluralistic are consistently found to have the happiest and most satisfied citizenry. The S'pore experience is at the opposite end of this perspective.
