TRE - 27/11/2011 Train breakdown on 26/11/2011 evening SMRT North-South line & SBS Transit North East Line

Two train faults on separate MRT lines in one evening

Two train faults were reported separately on different MRT lines on Mon evening (Dec 26th). One was reported on the North-South Line and the other on the North-East Line.
On the North-South Line, a train had to be pulled off the tracks at the Newton MRT station. A fault was reported on the train but SMRT did not mention what the problem was.
As a result, it caused delays throughout the north-bound SMRT service at about 6 pm.
SMRT posted the following on Twitter: “North-bound service to Jurong is slightly delayed. Please allow extra time for travel.”
Meanwhile, on the North-East Line run by SBS Transit, a sudden electrical surge on a train resulted in a loud “bang”, stalling the train and scaring some of its passengers. This happened on a train heading towards Punggol at about 7:30 pm.
The passengers of the affected train were asked to disembark at Hougang MRT station.
The North-East train service towards Punggol was likewise delayed.
A commuter said, “The train lights went off but the emergency lights came on… some people were screaming…”

  • Less Incidents on MRT:
SMRT should try to reduce the number of incidents – the breakdowns at the end of the year are worrisome. However, we are ending 2011 with 21 incidents on our MRT systems, that’s 7 less than 2010.
More train breakdowns will come as network becomes more complex, and number of commuters increased. No engineering system is perfect, not even in Japan or Hong Kong.
Our MRT N-S line tracks are built in 1987, second oldest in Southeast Asia. So as train tracks/systems get older, disruptions/breakdowns will happen. SMRT move close to 900 million passengers a year, to have 17 breakdowns – this is honestly not high. London Tube move 1.1 Billion passengers a year, they have an average of 1200-1500 breakdowns a year. The New York metro has an average breakdown rate of 151,000 miles, or 10+ times more breakdowns compared to SMRT. HK MTR is 1.9 mil km per incident comparable to SMRT.
People should not have too unrealistic expectations on train systems.

This IS related to the Foreign Trash Policy PAP institutionalized.
    SMRT CEO = Malaysian
    SMRT COO = Malaysian
    SMRT Engineers = High % PRC & M’sian
SMRT maintenance staff = High % Foreign Trash
SMRT passengers = High % Foreign Trash
Ay! Hello! The countries these Foreign Trash come from are absolute crap holes; how talented can they be? Must have cut corners like crazy…
Before the PAP gleefully invited the Trojan Horse into Singapore, these things are unimaginable. 20yrs ago, 10yrs ago, our MRT, staffed mainly by Singaporean are totally flawless and ran like clockwork.
We’ve got such a talented population but thesse idiots insist on bringing in shit to lower our collective competence.
Nonsense PAP; go and die lah!

It looks like hardly a week passed by without a hitch. The frequent train breakdowns are a cause of concern. Putting up with inconvenience is bad. Compromising the safety of commuters is worse and cannot be condoned. SMRT must make a concerted effort to improve its services. LTY must start breathing down Saw’s neck, literally as well figuratively.

If readers can analyze all these disruptions; it started after SMRT increased its train frequency. The tracks could be stressed-out because of the increased usages and laden-weights. Question is: Who are SMRT’s parts vendors? Curious to know.

    the NE-LINE is ‘driver-less’system.
what kind of security is put into place to ensure and ssure passengers’ total safety?
labour cost-cutting is not the only consideration when operating a train system’customers’ saftey and comfort should take top priorities.
cost-cutting can also come from savings from TOP EXECUTIVES over-PAYING themselves???
many corporations tried so hard to cut labour costs and ending up in poor customers’ service and compromise on prodcut quality.
ultimatley, the company suffer losses for various reasons like loss of income or from HEFTY accident compensation at the xepnse of SHAREHOLDERS.
CEOs and their lieutenants are groossly over-paid and these are the same ppl who keep harping about cost-savings by cutting ther staff’s salaries.
SMRT should not try to cut corners by look at the bigger picture for its long-run good.

So, is the ClEOpatra of SMRT staying to continue to draw her millions or to fix the train problems as she has claimed?
If she doesn’t know a damn thing about engineering, it’s best that she admits her incompetence, quit immediately and don’t be ‘kay kiang’ & try to act smart.
The school break is coming to an end in a week’s time. More breakdown is expected & more ppl will be affected. How safe are our kids on our ‘world class’ transport?
If our gahmen continues to trust that SMRT’s ClEOpatra will take care of the problems, our world class transport system may soon end up as the WORST class transport!!!!!!

  • Former Talent:
The issue is not just the statistics with respect to SMRT breakdown as mentioned by @Less Incidents on MRT, but one of finding out the background of the people running the show. It’s interesting to find out what @2 Footed Tackle put forward in the statistics. We need to check this out. If there is some credence in this, then this becomes the issue.
All those who are running SMRT are put there by people ‘who know what to do’ and are selected upon having to do what is expected because their primary interest is only to get rewarded by the authority. The authority is only interested in making more money and be rewarded – therefore to spend on maintenance work would increas expenses and will reduce profits. This is against what the ‘mentor’ wants and everyone who are in authority know this.
TRE or all those who are true Singaporeans and in positions to investigate should broadcast all these types of statistics, which the Strait Times fails to do. We need more statistics to confirm some of the following knowledge known through the grapevine, for examples:
    1. Did all HDB conveyancing go through the Lee & Lee?
    2. Who is the biggest single shareholder in SIA and SingTel and other companies?
    3. Who own some of the Taxi Companies?
    4. What is the total assets of the Lees?
    5. What is the reason for the past President Wee to be appointed as President of Singapore?
    6. In the past, who are the real contributors to the Singapore economy, e.g. who came up with the idea of industrialization, who made the decision to implement the MRT, who was responsible for starting the HDB, who introduced the Labour laws in the early 60’s that protect Singaporeans? etc.
Lets investigate all of these to put the picture right concerning the laying of the foundation for the success of Singapore in the 80’s, which eventually someone exploited this and got the credit by changing the social system to enhance themselves at the expense of depriving all the true Singaporeans who contributed to the real success of Singapore.

Will the trains breakdown when the people are on the way to the countdown to 2012? They better standby plan a countdown party inside the train to appease anger and swearing and smashing of more windows.

When Jan 3rd starts on Wednesday, it will be the “peakest of peak” period again.
People and families are all back from Holidays and Schools & Working Parents are back.
Lets hope such pblms don’t exist anymore, but I am sorry to say that “perhaps some of these Poor Passengers & Kids” needs to “sacrifice” abit & hope for a “breakdown” exactly deep inside a tunnel.
Maybe ,then , we will see Cleopatra resign quietly and “migrate away”.
Maybe then ,we will see the 60.1 % begin to “repent”
Maybe then , we will see Lui ,paddling away quietly.

It would make your reports more credible. Unlike the blog Temasek Revealed.

Editor: Yes, NEL is operated by SBS Transit. The report did not say it is run by SMRT. In any case, we have edited the report to make it clearer that NEL is operated by SBS Transit. Thank you for your feedback.

  • 新愚民:
UK and New York people did not complain too much about their higher train breakdown rates because their ministers, MPs and train CEO are not paid as high as what those in Singapore are paid. To stop complaint, the ministers, MPs, and CEO’s pay must be cut to reflect their performance. This is fair that Singaporeans complained about the train incidents.

    @Less Incidents on MRT
I must admonish you for your lackadaisical attitude. We must always be on our guard to ensure that singapore remain operating at a high standard of efficiency and object strongly to any slippage in standards else we go down the slippery path.
If the management of SMRT or the transport minsister cannot do the job, we should change a set of newer and fresher players. That is how it works in the corporate world. Asking the customers in this case the commuters to tolerate for declining service is non-existent in the business world!!!

Everywhere you go inside the SMRT, the trains are overloaded with the human ants, especially after the importation of about 2-million of the aliens from the outside. Population is around 5.18 to 5.5-million in this tiny island city. Will be shooting up to 6.5-million in a short span of time.

Heard from someone working in SMRT that this Saw is a bitch when it comes to man management and cost saving. She will go all out to cut cost, using parts that are not original. Imagine those parts could be reconditioned parts or lower quality ones. And those seniors who still have a conscience to remind her to maintain SMRT proud record of minimum breakdown during the last 20 yrs have been either been “blacklisted” or shown the open door.
